Fasting reasons

Obligatory

Ramadan

  • Islam is built upon five: the testimony that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan.

  • Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.

Voluntary

Six Days of Shawwal

  • Whoever fasts six days after the Fitr will have completed the year, for whoever does a good deed will have the reward of ten like it.

  • Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.

  • Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.

Days of Arafah and Ashura

  • Abu Qatada (ra) reported the Messenger Muhammad (pbuh) said: I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years, and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year.

White Days

  • The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) advised Abu Dharr (ra): If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.

  • Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As: It is sufficient for you to fast three days in a month, as the reward of a good deed is multiplied ten times, so it will be like fasting throughout the year.

  • Abu Qatada (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: Fasting three days every month and that of Ramadan every year is a perpetual fasting.

Monday and Thursday

  • Narrated Abu ʻUbaid (ra) I attended the ʻId (prayer) along with ʻUmar. He offered prayer before the sermon. He then said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited fasting on these two days. As regards Id al-Adha, you eat the meat of your sacrificial animals. As for ʻId al-Fitr, you break (i.e. end) your fast.
